Threads of Compassion: Raising Funds to Stitch Together Community Support
Aurora Sewing Center’s 38th Annual Banquet at marked another year of celebration and giving back to the community. Held each June to commemorate the Club Season, this event brings together sewers and friends for a night of festivity, community and philanthropy.
One of the highlights of the evening is the Sew and Share room, a showcase of creativity featuring a diverse array of completed projects: from bags to garments, embroidered pieces to quilts and wall hangings, and many other sewn gifts. It's a testament to the dedication, inspiration and skill of the sewing community, and in many cases our teachers as well.

In addition to the inspiring displays and delicious food, attendees enjoyed engaging in various fundraising activities. A silent auction, door prizes, Sew & Share prizes, and a 50/50 raffle were all part of the evening's efforts to raise funds for a local charity. This year, the chosen beneficiary was Pete’s Pillows Charity, founded by Karen Overhoff five years ago.
Pete’s Pillows Charity holds a special place in the hearts of many. Named in memory of Pete, who battled serious illness, the charity began with Karen making soft pillowcases to comfort him during his hospital stays. It grew into a community-driven initiative that brings together volunteers—over 40 strong—to create a range of comforting items, from pillowcases and masks to blankets and snuggle creatures. These handmade treasures are donated to various local organizations including Grace House, Gerard Place, Ronald McDonald House, and Oishei Children's Hospital, among many, many others.
The generosity and support shown at this year’s Banquet were truly remarkable. Thanks to the attendees, vendors, and the dedicated team at Aurora Sewing Center, a total of $3,501 was raised for Pete’s Pillows Charity. This contribution ensures that the creativity and love imbued in each handmade item continue to spread warmth and comfort throughout the community.
Scott and Alyssa, along with the entire Aurora Sewing Center team, extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this event possible. Special thanks go to Karen Overhoff and all the volunteers at Pete’s Pillows for their unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
In the spirit of community and compassion, the Aurora Sewing Center looks forward to continuing its tradition of stitching together support for those in need, one heartfelt creation at a time.
